Mastodons Fall to Rockets, Even Record at 7-7

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The IPFW men's tennis team fell in a battle with the Toledo Rockets on Friday evening, evening the teams record at 7-7 in the process.

"Tonight was a tough loss with four matches going three sets in singles," said assistant coach Jonathan Batuello. "I'm proud of Martin (Muadi) and Karl (Wangensten-Oye) for fighting to win their third-set tiebreakers. It isn't always easy to keep fighting when the team match is decided, but they kept their energy up and got the wins."

The Rockets earned the doubles point with a 6-3 win at No. 1 pairs, while winning 6-4 at No. 3 doubles just after. The No. 2 doubles team of Andres Cobos and Daniel Cardenas was trailing by the narrowest of margins (5-4) when the match was stopped with the doubles point already in hand.

In singles, Cobos fell 6-4, 6-3 at No. 2 singles, and was followed by a 6-4, 7-5 Toledo win at No. 3 singles over Carlos do Val. With the match result hanging in the balance, the remaining four singles matches all needed an extra set; however, the Rockets came out on top at No. 1 singles as Gerard Guell fell 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.,

Cardenas battled to a 1-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) loss at No. 4 singles, before Muadi won 3-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-6) at No. 5 singles. The match was capped with a 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (10-6) Wangensten-Oye win at No. 6 singles, giving the match its 5-2 final score.

The Mastodons take a day off, before returning to action for a pair of matches, the first at 10 a.m. at home against Cleveland State, before traveling to South Bend to take on the the 36th ranked Fighting Irish in the early evening.
