Men's Tennis Opens Weekend with Loss at Marquette

MILWAUKEE, Wis. - The IPFW men's tennis team dropped its weekend opener on Friday evening, falling to the Marquette Golden Eagles 7-0.
"It's always tough to lose 7-0, but this team fought extremely hard today," said IPFW assistant coach Jonathan Batuello. "We had players fighting off match points, including Andres Cobos at No. 2 singles, holding off six match points in the second-set tiebreaker to split sets. Eventually we had three matches lose in a third set, and the others were very competitive against a quality opponent. This was a good match and shows we can compete against some strong teams."
Marquette struck early, taking the doubles point; however, not without a big fight from the Mastodons. The Golden Eagle No. 1 doubles team won 6-3, before the No. 3 doubles match needed extra points, before Marquette squeaked out a 7-5 win. The No. 2 doubles team of Daniel Cardenas and Andres Cobos did not finish their match, as they were tied 2-2 in the tiebreaker for a match that was knotted 6-6.
In singles, there were just two traditional-length two-set matches, including a 6-4, 6-2 IPFW loss at No. 1 singles by Gerard Guell, and a 6-4, 6-2 loss at No. 3 by Cardenas that gave the hosts a 3-0 lead in the match scoring. Carlos do Val fell 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 at No. 4 singles, as Marquette clinched the match victory.
Karl Wangensten-Oye fell 7-5, 4-6, 1-0 (10-8) in a battle at No. 6 singles, before Martin Muadi took the first set before falling 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 5 singles. the marathon-match of the evening came at No. 2 singles, where IPFW's Cobos dropped the first set 6-2, before bouncing back for an extended tiebreaker win by a 7-6 (12-10) score. In the deciding third set, he was edged 10-6, securing the sweep for the Golden Eagles.
The loss drops IPFW to 4-5 on the season, and the squad will get a chance to even its record on Saturday evening when the team travels south to face off against the UIC Flames.
