
Sato and Sherif Take Tournament Titles in Bowling Green

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - IPFW sophomores Mayu Sato, and Sara Sherif brought home individual titles at flight one and flight seven, respectively, as the Mastodons put together strong performances at the 2014 Bowling Green Invitational.
Sato improved to 5-1 on the season, and have won five straight matches after dropping her season-opener to the No. 1 player from Michigan State. Sato - who opened the tournament with back-to-back straight-set victories, capped off the weekend with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Lauren Golick of Cleveland State in the finals.
Sherif, who opened the weekend with two straight wins at No. 7 singles, cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Cincinnati's Samantha Perry.
Carlota Trevino and Alina Schibol advanced to the finals of the third flight of doubles, before falling to the Cleveland State team of Golick and Folkers by an 8-4 score.
In doubles, the pair of Sato and Marcy Huck fell in a tightly-contested battle with the Toledo pair of Pia Rygh and Sidnay Huck. Sidnay, Marcy's younger sister, led the team to an 8-7 (7-4) win in the semifinals. The IPFW pair rebounded for an 8-2 win in the third-place match against the team from UIC.
In flight six of the singles, Marcy Huck and Emily Richardson each advanced to the fifth-place match; however, to keep to teammates from playing each other, Richardson faced off against Toledo's Kayleigh Hall, and fell 6-2, 3-6, 10-5, while Lauren Thai, also of Toledo, topped Huck 6-2, 6-2.
Alina Schibol, after dropping her opening match in the fourth flight, rebounded with a win over Bianca Zuzu of UIC, before falling in the fifth-place match to Valeryia Kulikovskaya by a 6-2, 6-4 score.
Sofia Sorokina, who also fell in her opening match, rebounded with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Youngstown State's Victoria Ferry, before falling in the fifth place match in the fifth flight of singles by a 6-2, 6-3 score to Melika LeBlanc of UIC.
At second singles Trevino fell in the third-place match by a 6-0, 6-1 score over Nino Sujashvili of Detroit. Ella Norgren fell 6-3, 6-3 in the seventh-place match at flight three.
Schibol and Richardson fell in the consolation bracket to Cincinnati's Bure and Miller by an 8-4 score before bouncing back with an 8-3 win in the seventh-place match over Brendel and Ferry from Youngstown State.
Also in the third flight of doubles, the pair of Norgren and Kristine Lindal fell in the consolation bracket by an 8-3 score, before rebounding for an 8-7 win in the seventh-place match, Lindal's first win in over a year after missing all of last season with an injury.
Next weekend the Mastodons travel to Toledo to compete at the Toledo Rocket Invitational on October 3 and 4.
