
Mastodons Dominate in Title Defense Opener

DENVER - The IPFW women's tennis team opened its Summit League Tournament title defense on Friday afternoon with a dominating 4-0 win over the Western Illinois Leathernecks, setting up a meeting with South Dakota State at noon on Saturday for a chance to advance to the League title match for the sixth consecutive season.
The win improves IPFW's season record to 17-9 on the season while Western Illinois falls to 0-19. IPFW's next match pits the Mastodons against one of two teams who toppled the 'Dons in Summit League play this year.
IPFW quickly took the doubles point, as Carlota Trevino and Ella Norgren won 8-1 before Marcy Huck and 2014 Summit League Player of the Year Mayu Sato also won by an 8-1 score.
With the doubles point decided, and the match being played to decision, the No. 2 doubles pair of Emily Richardson and Miloslava Shustova were pulled off the court with a 5-3 advantage.
In singles, Ella Norgren swept her opponent 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles, before Trevino also swept her opponent 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 singles. With the Mastodons needing just one more victory, Sofia Sorokina swept her opponent 6-0, 6-1 to close the door for the IPFW win.
Huck was just a point away from victory when the match was halted, leading 6-1, 5-1, with Shustova leading 6-2 before the match was stopped between her sets, and Sato leading 5-3 in the first set.
