FORT WAYNE, Ind. - IPFW men's and women's tennis assistant coach Brett Barnett has stepped down from his role with the Mastodons to become the new head women's tennis coach at the University of South Dakota.
"I want to thank Eric Burns, Kelley Hartley Hutton, and the entire athletic department for their support the past three and a half years," said Barnett. "Although I am very excited for this opportunity, it is tough to leave two great teams. I am proud of the men's team and everything that we have accomplished over the last three years. I am proud that the men's tennis program competes for Summit League Championships on a yearly basis and will have a great chance to win it this year. I wish all of the teams at IPFW nothing but the best moving forward."
Barnett was an assistant coach with the squad for the past three and a half years, and was named the Summit League Men's Tennis Coach of the Year in 2014 after the squad set a program record with 19 victories, falling in the finals of the 2014 Summit League Championships.
"I am obviously disappointed to see Brett go, but this is a great opportunity for him to be a head coach," said IPFW head tennis coach Eric Burns. "I am proud of him and the job he did with our men's team. He helped turn the program into a Summit League contender, and we now have two championship-caliber tennis programs at IPFW as a result. IPFW Athletics and our tennis teams will miss him and his contributions to our program. Brett is a class act and an excellent coach. I wish him the best of luck at USD and I want to thank him for being a great colleague and friend."
