
Women's Tennis Picked Second in Preseason Poll

ELMHURST, Ill.-- The IPFW women's tennis team was picked to finish second in the Summit League standings according to a preseason poll of league head coaches. The Mastodons received two first place votes and ended the poll with 44 points, just two shy of top ranked Kansas City.
Kansas City garnered five of seven first-place votes to total 46 points, edging out IPFW's 44 points and two first-place votes. South Dakota (32) finished third and IUPUI (28), which had the remaining first-place vote, was fourth. Oakland (24) edged South Dakota State (23) for sixth with newcomer Omaha (17) and Western Illinois (10) finishing the final two spots.
Anita Henestrosa, the 2012 Newcomer of the Year, will lead the Mastodons in 2013. Henestrosa claimed all-league honors a year ago and was twice recognized as the Summit League Player of the Week for her outstanding play during the weeks of February 7 and April 10.
Caterina Kiefer is another skilled player for IPFW that will impact the program this season. Kiefer played No. 4 singles last year and posted an overall record of 18-7. She was also paired with Marcy Huck at the No. 1 doubles position. The team of Kiefer and Huck went 17-9 overall and 7-1 in the Summit League.
The 2013 Summit League schedule begins Feb. 3 when Western Illinois plays at Omaha. Women's league play begins March 14 in Kansas City with the first of three cluster weekends. The Summit League Tennis Championships will be hosted by IPFW on April 26-27.
IPFW's first action of the 2013 season will take place at Toledo on Friday, Jan. 25 with action getting underway at 1 p.m. Their first home match will be played the next day vs. Eastern Michigan at 4 p.m.
