Orem, UT-IPFW freshman catcher Tara Mickelson has been named to the NCAA Division I Independent Softball All-Independent Second-Team and All-Independent Newcomer Team. Voting is conducted by sports information directors and head coaches at NCAA Division I Independent institutions.
Mickelson was named IPFW softball team's most valuable player this season as well, leading the team in nearly every offensive category including batting average, hits, doubles, triples, homeruns, RBI, slugging percentage, and on base percentage.
As of games through May 27, she is currently ranked fourth in the nation in the Toughest to Strikeout category, fanning only three times in 90 at bats this season.
Mickelson's teammate Brooke Walter was named to the NCAA Division I Independent Softball All-Academic Team earlier this season. Walter, the 'Dons first baseman, currently holds a 3.45 GPA and is pursuing a degree in General Studies.
