Fort Wayne, IN-IPFW softball dropped to 5-20 on the season, after losing two straight to Ball State this afternoon. Despite a brief three run lead in the first game, IPFW was unable to hold on as Cardinals battled back to an 8-5 victory. The first inning was relatively quiet with no hits for either team, but in the second, the scoreboard lit up with Ball State tacking up two runs, while the 'Dons answered back with five of their own. Designated player, Jil Price was the first 'Don on, reaching on an error by the BSU third baseman. Then the Cardinal's pitcher, Amanda Pick, walked Ashley Tharp and Beatrice Pedraza to load the bases. Michelle Meighen hit a ball over the right fielder's head to bring in Price and start the Mastodons' scoring. Kayla Powell brought in Tharp and Pedraza while an Abby Liden double batted in Meighen and Powell to give the 'Dons a 5-2 lead. Ball State came up big in the third with five hits and four runs to take the lead back. The Cardinals would go on to score two more runs, topping the 'Dons by three. Jenna Connelly fell to 0-2 on the year giving up 7 hits and 6 earned runs in 2.1 innings pitched. In game two action, Ball State out-hit the 'Dons 5 to 2, while IPFW committed two errors as well, to give the Cardinals a 6-0 win. Katie Aspegren took the loss for the 'Dons giving up 3 hits and 4 earned runs, while striking out 7 Red Birds.
Abby Liden had both of the Mastodons hits in game two, going 2 for 3. The 'Dons will travel to Dayton on Sunday, April 22 to take on the Flyers. The first pitch will be at noon. ~Dons~ |
