Malibu, CA-The men's and women's cross country teams traveled to sunny Malibu, CA over the weekend to compete in the Pepperdine Invitational. The women's team finished fifth of twelve teams defeating seven squads including UCLA, Pepperdine, and Fresno State. The men's team placed seventh overall.
The women's team was led by junior Crystina Martinez who shattered the school record by 42 seconds in the 6k race with a time of 21:04.77. The previous record was held by 2007 graduate and IPFW Cross Country standout Ashley Ritchey who posted a time of 21:53.50. Martinez took a team-high eighth place in the meet.
Crystal Martinez was right on her sister's heels with a personal best time of 21:06.08. Crystal was the only other `Don to finish in the top ten with a tenth place finish.
Sussy Odipo (21:50.68/30th), Val Hardesty (21:52.49/31st), and Ashley Porter (22:15.96/41st) rounded out IPFW's top five finishers.
On the men's side, Hunter Paris led the men to with a tenth place finish with a time of 25:09.71. Paris reset the school record in the 8k, defeating his own time in last week's Mel Brodt Invitational by more than 20 seconds.
Rounding out the top-five performances by the men were Garret Bradtmueller (26:37.1743rd), Randy Quirk (26:45.66/46th), Mark Green (26:53.73/49th), and Russel Wilk (27:16.34/59th).
The `Dons will head to South Bend, IN on Friday, September 28 to compete in the Notre Dame Invitational.
