Bangkok, Thailand - IPFW outside hitter C.J. Macias registered a match-high 10 points to help the U.S. Men's Volleyball Team advanced to the medal round at the World University Games with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-22) victory over Chinese Taipei on Monday in Bangkok, Thailand.

Macias, seeing his most extensive action of the 2007 games, put down seven kills, had two blocks, and fired off a service ace.  He was co-match high with Matt Proper (Penn State) and Jayson Jablonsky (UC-Irvine) who each registered 10 kills.

"I had a lot of confidence that the guys that haven't been playing a lot could win the match, and I thought they did a great job," U.S. Head Coach Alan Knipe said. "They made a few errors early, but it kind of reminds me of the first match that we played with our other guys and they made errors - partly the first real-match jitters. I thought they settled down and played really well as the match went on. Thornton did a really good job running the offense.

"Now our guys who have played a lot got a breather, and all of the guys have some match play under their belt," Knipe continued. "I have a lot of faith in everyone going into the medal round."

Team USA held the lead throughout most of the first and second sets. In the third, Taipei gained a 4-1 advantage to open the set before an ace by Nick Scheftic (UCLA)closed the gap to one at 4-3. Taipei held the third set close, tying the score several times and moving within one point at 20-19 when the U.S. pulled ahead for the win.

The U.S. Men won Pool C with a 5-0 record and will face Ukraine (4-1), the second-place finisher in Pool A, in the quarterfinals on Wednesday at 5 p.m. local time. (3 a.m. PDT, 6 a.m. EDT)
