Columbus, OH - #10 Ohio State avenged last year's loss to #9 IPFW in the MIVA Championship match in the 2008 opener for both squads tonight at St. John Arena. The Buckeyes topped the Mastodons, 3-2. Ohio State won by the scores of 25-30, 30-28, 25-30, 30-21, and 15-6. The Buckeyes spread the offense around with four players registering double-digit kills. Robbie Klein led the OSU attack with 20 kills while hitting .357. All-America setter Daniel Matthews dished out 68 assists and led the Buckeyes with 11 total blocks (1 solo, 10 assists). IPFW was led by All-America outside hitter C.J. Macias. The Fort Lauderdale, Florida native put down a match-high 23 balls. Senior opposite Jason Yhost was the only other 'Don in double-digits with 14 kills. Yhost also had a team-high six total blocks (2 solo, 4 assists). Sophomore libero Matt Pliske led the Mastodon defensive effort with 17 digs. Senior setter Graydon Ainsworth, in his first match running the Mastodons offense, had 48 assists. Ohio State (1-0, 1-0 MIVA) out-hit IPFW .338 to .192. The Mastodons (0-1, 0-1 MIVA) will open the home portion of the 2008 season next Friday (1/18), hosting the top-ranked BYU Cougars in a 7:00 p.m. non-conference match at the Hilliard Gates Sports Center. ~Dons~
