Indianapolis, IN -IUPUI broke out of the gate on an 8-1 run and never looked back, topping IPFW 74-57 on Saturday night in Indianapolis. The win gave the Jaguars a season sweep of the Mastodons. IPFW suffered through a first half that saw the 'Dons hit on only 20% of their attempts from the floor. After the first 20-minutes, the Mastodons trailed 31-17. It was the 'Dons lowest first frame output since a 13 point first half at Illinois State on December 6, 2005. IPFW showed signs of life after the break. Sophomore guard Kyle Savely sparked a 6-0 run to begin the half with a triple and a slashing layup that cut the Jags' lead to 31-23. IUPUI, who buried 10-18 from behind the arc, shot themselves back to a double-digit lead just minutes later on a triple from junior guard Austin Montgomery. IPFW cut the lead back to nine (40-31) with 13:56 left, on a triple by senior guard Quintin Carouthers. After a thunderous slam by junior forward Jaraun Burrows, IPFW had pulled to within seven at 45-38. But, after a steal and layup by senior guard David Barlow, the Jaguars led by 12 and never looked back. Barlow led all scorers for IUPUI (5-5) with a game-high 23 points, including three first-half triples. Montgomery posted 18 points and sophomore guard Gary Patterson chipped in 10. The Mastodons (3-8) were led by Carouthers with 14 points. Savely finished with nine points, and junior guard Demetrius Johnson, seeing his first action as a Mastodon, finished the contest with eight points, six assists, and a steal. The 'Dons rallied to shoot 51.6% in the second half and finished at 37.5% from the floor. However, IPFW was an uncharacteristic 3-17 from behind the arc.
IUPUI shot 47.9% from the floor and outrebounded IPFW 38-26. The loss was the Mastodons' fourth straight. They will look to end that slide when they host Marygrove on Monday night at 7:00pm.
