Fort Wayne, IN - IPFW senior centerfielder Jared Davis has been named to the 2008 Brooks Wallace Player of the Year Watch List.

The Brooks Wallace Award is presented annually to the national college baseball player of the year. The selection committee for the Wallace Award is comprised of a national panel of coaches, sports information directors, former winners and beat media who most closely follow the sport.

In 2007, Davis was named the NCAA Division I Independent Baseball Newcomer of the Year. He led the Mastodons in several offensive categories compiling a .376 batting average, nine home runs, 18 doubles, and 54 RBI's.

Davis' 54 RBI's placed him 23rd in the nation, while his 18 doubles gave him 35th ranking in the country. He was 69th in slugging percentage at .636.

"Not only is this an honor for Jared Davis, but it is also an honor for our program," IPFW head baseball coach Billy Gernon said.

"We hope that all individual accolades translate into team success, and Jared Davis is very deserving of this nomination."

Vanderbilt's David Price won the 2007 Brooks Wallace Award.

The Wallace Award is a dedication to the memory of the former Texas Tech player and assistant coach Brooks Wallace. Wallace was a shortstop at Texas Tech from 1977 to 1980. After playing two years in the Texas Rangers organization, he returned to Texas Tech and served as a graduate assistant and later as an assistant coach. In the summer of 1984, he was diagnosed with cancer and fought the disease courageously until his death on March 24, 1985, at age 27.

Davis and the Mastodons open their first campaign as a member of the Summit League on February 29 at Georgia State.
