FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Former IUPUI assistant coach Ashley Botham has been named the head coach for the Fort Wayne women's track and field program, athletic director Kelley Hartley Hutton announced on Thursday (Dec. 14).
"Ashley's experience at the mid-major level is a perfect fit for Fort Wayne," Hartley Hutton said. "Additionally, she already has an Indiana recruiting base thanks to her time at IUPUI. I'm excited to watch her transform and grow the program."
Botham joins the Mastodons after serving as IUPUI's top assistant since July 2015. She was the primary coach for the middle distance events with school record performances in the 400, 800, 1500, 4x400 and Distance Medley Relay.
Prior to IUPUI, Botham was a volunteer assistant coach at Florida State University. She directed the Seminoles' B team and helped FSU to a 12th-place national finish in cross country in 2014. FSU earned a runner-up finish at both the ACC Cross Country Championships and South Region before just missing a top-10 national finish. FSU capped the season with a sixth-place finish nationally on the outdoor track.
She served as a graduate assistant at Belmont University during the 2013-14 season, after completing her running career for the Bruins in 2013. She was a Second Team Ohio Valley Conference performer in both cross country and track in 2012-13 in her lone competitive season at Belmont. She began her career at Grand Valley State, earning All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) honors and was a two-time NCAA qualifier.
"I want to thank athletic director Kelley Hartley Hutton for the opportunity to lead the Fort Wayne track and field program," Botham said. "As a first time head coach, it means a lot to me that she believes and supports my vision for growing the program and establishing a championship culture. Fort Wayne has the pieces it takes to be great and I'm excited to work hard for a group of young women who are willing to give all to reach their goals on and off the track."
Botham is USATF Level 1 certified. She graduated from GVSU in 2012 with a degree in Exercise Science before completing her postgraduate work in Sports Administration from Belmont in 2014.
"Ashley's hire is an important step to restructure the track and field program," Hartley Hutton continued. "Mike Fruchey will continue to serve as the men's and women's cross country head coach and move from head coach to assistant for the women's track and field program. Mike is excited about the change and helped lead the search for a track and field head coach this past month."
Fort Wayne returns to competition on Jan. 20 in the Fort Wayne Duals.
