OVERLAND PARK, Kan. -- IPFW standout shortstop Greg Kaiser has been selected as one of 10 NCAA® baseball student-athletes who excel both on and off the diamond as a finalist for the 2016 Senior CLASS Award® in collegiate baseball. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition. The complete list of finalists are listed below.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
Kaiser, a third-year starting shortstop for the Mastodons, is currently hitting .271 with nine home runs, 12 doubles and 24 RBIs, and was recently named The Summit League Player of the Week for his performance April 11-17. He hit .647 (11-17) in four games, all wins, including a three-game league road sweep at Western Illinois where he hit .692 (9-13) with five home runs, two doubles, 10 RBIs, nine runs, three walks and two stolen bases. Kaiser had 26 total bases for a 2.000 slugging percentage, along with a .750 on-base percentage during the three games at WIU. He was also one of seven players (only two position players) named as Louisville Slugger® National Players of the Week by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper that week, as well as being named the College Sports Madness Summit League Player of the Week and a D1 Baseball HERO of the Week.
Kaiser is consistently involved with IPFW Baseball community service events and functions. He is a business finance major with a 3.69 grade point average, and was named to the 2015 Capital One Academic All-America Third Team and the Academic All-Summit League Team. According to IPFW baseball head coach Bobby Pierce, the character that Greg possesses helped him through a long journey toward enjoying success with the Mastodons … he began his career at Purdue University, but did not make the baseball team, before transferring back home to IPFW and joining the squad. Kaiser played in just three games in 2013, before starting 43 games in 2014, batting .297 with eight home runs and a team-best 38 RBIs, while starting 51 games in 2015, batting a team-best .361 with a team-high 10 homers along with 43 RBIs. He was selected to the 2015 American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/Rawlings All-Mideast Region First Team and All-Summit League Second Team.
Finalists were chosen by national media from the list of 30 candidates announced in March. Nationwide fan voting begins immediately to help select the winner. Fans are encouraged to vote on the Senior CLASS Award website through June 6. Fan votes will be combined with media and Division I head coaches' votes to determine the winner. This year's Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2016 College World Series® in June. For more information on all of the finalists, visit seniorCLASSaward.com.
