CHICAGO, Ill. – In a final tune-up before the regular season begins next Friday, the IPFW women's soccer team used two late-game goals to take down UIC 2-0 in an exhibition match on Saturday night. The 'Dons were part of a historic evening for the Flames, who hosted the first game in program history at Flames Field as the team kicks off their inaugural year at the university.
After a closely contested first half, the score remained knotted at zero with UIC narrowly edging out IPFW 4-2 in total shots over the first 45 minutes. Of the six shots, the 'Dons were responsible for the only shot on goal.
Redshirt freshman Kylie Dunning, making her first start in the net for the Blue and White, recorded the shutout in the opening half with one save.
The second period seemed to be playing out much like the first until the 'Dons mustered an offensive barrage and scored two goals in the final five minutes to secure the victory. The first was off the foot of sophomore forward Andie Lazzerini, the team's returning leading scorer from a year ago, in the 85th minute. Junior midfielder Brooke Bishir followed with a second goal in the 89th minute to end the match. Lazzerini led the offense for the second-straight game, registering five shots on the night with three of those on goal.
Behind a strong second half, IPFW out-shot the Flames 13-8 for the game while limiting UIC to just four shots during the second 45 minute period. Another redshirt freshman saw action in the goal as Kathryn Jenkins preserved the shutout with three saves en route to a scoreless second half.
The games start to count towards the team's record next weekend when the regular season begins on Friday, August 22 as the Mastodons travel to Ball State for a 5 p.m. contest.
