FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The IPFW women's soccer team kicked off the 2014 campaign on an unusually chilly and windy late-summer night as they hosted Northern Illinois for an exhibition match at Hefner Field on Tuesday.
A slow start plagued the Mastodons and the Huskies took advantage early, scoring three minutes into the game on a long goal by Northern Illinois' Sara Spaulding that sailed just over the head of IPFW goalkeeper, junior Sam Pavlika, into the back corner of the net.
The home team recovered quickly, however, as they intensified the attack in the midfield and won a majority of the possession battles for the remainder of the first half. IPFW's best chance of the opening period came with 14 minutes left as junior forward Rachel Good skimmed a shot just over the top crossbar from outside the left corner of the 18-yard box.
The defense was also able to settle down from the early miscue and played solidly in front of Pavlika. After the early goal, the Mastodons out-shot the Huskies 8-7 and applied plenty of pressure on the Northern Illinois back line throughout the first 45 minutes. They couldn't find the equalizer, though, and trailed 1-0 heading into intermission.
IPFW came out of the locker room with a spark, stringing together crisp passes in the Huskies' half of the field. With the wind at their back in the second half, IPFW tried to use the elements to its advantage, sending several long balls in the air for the forwards to run down. The pressure paid off in the 58th minute as sophomore Gaby Romo was fouled inside the box after an offensive push and the Mastodons were rewarded with a penalty shot. Freshman Taylor Pavlika, seeing her first collegiate action, was called upon to take the penalty kick and looked like a veteran as she calmly planted the ball in the back right corner of the net to even the score at one a piece.
The Blue and White continued to attack, creating several chances in front of the Northern Illinois goal, but couldn't find an opening past the Huskies' last line of defense. With no overtime period in an exhibition match, the game ended deadlocked at one.
It was a solid debut for the 2014 squad, as they recorded 14 shots to the Huskies' 10 and came back from an early deficit to earn a tie.
The Mastodons will have one more tune-up in an exhibition game at UIC on Saturday, August 16 at 8:30 p.m. before opening the regular season on the road at Ball State on Friday, August 22 at 5 p.m. in Muncie, Ind.
