FORT WAYNE, Ind. - IPFW women's volleyball head coach Steve Florio has announced the addition of three players for the 2014 season in Monica Hall, Sierra Reed, and Lauren Hoffman. Hall and Reed come to the Mastodons as transfers from Costal Carolina and Eastern Michigan, respectively, with each having two years of eligibility remaining, while Hoffman comes in as a high school recruit from Monroeville, Ind.
The trio joins a 2014 class that already includes Natalie Seiler and Clair Marshall who signed with the Mastodons in the fall.
"I'm thrilled about Monica, Sierra and Lauren, as they are all three not only talented volleyball players, but they are extremely strong students," Florio states. "They will absolutely help our program continue the long standing tradition of excellence in the classroom as well as on the court. Our team culture is healthy and strong, and these three young women's friendly, fun, and hard-working personalities are a perfect addition."
Hall, a 6-3 outside and right side hitter from Niverville, New York, spent two seasons at Costal Carolina where she played in 46 matches including making 16 starts as a freshman. Academically, Hall was named to 2012-13 Big South Conference Presidential Honor Roll. In her first season for the Chanticleers, Hall accumulated 120 kills and 40 blocks, both of which ranked fifth on the squad. A four-year varsity player at Ichabod Crane High School, Hall was named the Most Outstanding Offensive Player of the Year in the Colonial Council and was selected as a First Team All-Star as a senior. She was also named to the 2011-12 American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Under Armour Girls' High School All-America Watch List.
"At 6-3 and with two years of experience at the NCAA Division I level, Monica helps us meet an immediate need of adding depth and variety to the outside and right-side for attacking and blocking," Florio says.
Reed, a native from Muncie, Indiana, played in 66 career matches in two seasons at Eastern Michigan, primarily as a libero. During her time at EMU, Reed earned academic Dean's List honors. As a freshman, Reed played in all 33 matches and finished with a team best 538 digs. This past season, Reed had a season-high 26 digs against Hartford and finished the year averaging 1.17 digs per set. While at Wapahani High School, Reed was a two-time Indiana All-State First Team selection and led the Raiders to the 2011 Indiana Class 2A State Championship.
"Sierra's experience as a libero coupled with her pedigree of winning throughout her career will add depth to our defense and competitiveness to our roster," Florio says. "She will challenge our current defenders for the libero position right away."
Hoffman comes to IPFW from Heritage High School where she was an outside and right side hitter. The 6-0 Hoffman was named an Allen County Athletic Conference First Team selection and was a member of the National Honor Society at Heritage. Hoffman led the Patriots this past season with 227 kills, a .348 hitting percentage, and 83 blocks en route to being named the team's Offensive Player of the Year. She was also named a 2014 Sertoma Award winner.
"Lauren is a very hard working athlete capable of playing any position in the front row," Florio says. "Her powerful attack and versatility is reminiscent of some of our great alumni who have earned All-League honors in multiple positions. I'm very proud to have yet another highly decorated local talent representing IPFW. She is loaded with potential and I'm excited to watch her grow over the next four years."
