LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - On the final day of the UALR round robin, the IPFW baseball team picked up the first win over an SEC team in its Division I era, 11-8 over Missouri, before falling to the host Trojans 3-1.
Seven different IPFW players collected multiple hits on the day led by Carter DeBoe who finished 4-for-9, including a home run, drove in four runs and scored twice. Kristian Gayday went 3-for-6 at the dish with two walks. Brandon Soat and Lucas Salerno both drove in two and came around to score twice. Evan VanSumeren, Kevin Wirth, and Shane Trevino all collected two hits on the afternoon.
In the opener against the Tigers, IPFW scored in the top of the first on a one-out single to left field by DeBoe.
Missouri scored three runs in the second, but IPFW answered with a run in the third on two-out double from DeBoe. The Tigers responded with a two-run double in the bottom of the third.
The 'Dons took a lead in the fourth as they scored six runs in the inning, all of which came with at least one out. With the bases loaded, Salerno doubled to right field to plate a pair of runs. One out later, Soat singled to score two more before DeBoe capped off the inning with a two-run home run over the right field fence, his first of the season and 10th in his career.
Missouri added two runs in the fifth and another in the sixth to lead 8-7.
The IPFW offense scored three runs in the seventh. A ground ball by VanSumeren led to a Tiger error, allowing two runners to score. VanSumeren later scored on a wild pitch by Missouri for the final run of the game.
Kevin Kimball improved his record to 2-0 on the season, coming on in relief to pitch three innings, allowing one earned run on one hit. Kyle Sorensen earned his first save of the season, pitching the final two innings and allowing one hit.
Game two began as a pitchers' duel between Dane Davis and the UALR starter Ethan Schlechte. Neither pitcher earned a decision despite allowing just one run each. Davis lasted 6.2 innings and allowed four hits while Brandon Phelps took the loss, pitching the final 1.1 innings.
The Trojans scored first in the bottom of the first inning on a single with two outs.
In the fifth, IPFW scored its lone run of the game on a UALR error with the bases loaded. The Mastodons left the bases loaded as the next three batters went down in order.
In the eighth inning UALR scored a pair of runs, including the game-winner, on a two-out single up the middle.
IPFW now turns its attention to 24th ranked Arkansas on March 3 with first pitch set for 4:05 p.m. (EST).
