FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The IPFW men's basketball team opened the 2014-15 season with an offensive outburst, scoring 110 points in a 31-point victory over Olivet College on Sunday afternoon, topping the Comets 110-79 in exhibition action.
Six players reached double-figure scoring for the Mastodons, led by 20 points from Mo Evans, while Joe Edwards and Steve Forbes each scored 14, Jure Gunjina scored 12, and 11 each from Kevin Harden and Gage Davis.
Isaiah McCray pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds, as he narrowly missed a double-double with nine points, while also leading the team with four assists and two blocked shots. Kevin Harden pulled down six rebounds for the Mastodons, who out-rebounded Olivet 43-to-24 in the game.
The Mastodons got on the board quickly in the game with a Forbes dunk to kick off the scoring, before Olivet answered with a basket of their own. A Mo Evans three-pointer 42 seconds into the game gave IPFW a lead that it would not relinquish for the remainder of the contest.
IPFW had trouble shaking off the pesky Comets, with the visitors cutting the gap to as few as three at 30-27 following an Aaron Washington three-pointer with 7:14 to play in the opening stanza.
From there, however, it was all Mastodons, as the hosts used a 23-7 run in which IPFW hit all eight of its shots over the final 6:37 to pull ahead 53-34 at the break.
In the second half the visitors climbed only as close as 18 before a 14-2 run pushed the margin to 30, as the Mastodons cruised to the 31-point win.
IPFW hit 63 percent of its shots in the game (34-of-54), and 10-of-23 (43.5%) from long range. Olivet was 30-of-67 (44.8%) from the field and 10-of-26 (38.5%) from beyond the arc.
The Mastodons open the 2014-15 regular season on Friday, November 14 when the team plays host to the Manchester University Spartans in a 7 p.m. tip-off at the Gates Sports Center.
