FORT WAYNE, Ind. - An Oscar Uyamadu goal in the 73rd minute of the game knotted the score at one goal apiece; however, a Valparaiso goal just under two minutes later provided the final tally, as the Crusaders topped IPFW 2-1 in front of over 3,200 fans in an exhibition contest at the Shindigz National Soccer Festival.
Uyamadu glanced a pass from Corey Tom of the side of his head, and just inside of the left goalpost, countering a Valparaiso first half goal.
Two minutes later the Crusaders got a goal from Nick Suker to give the game its final margin at 2-1.
Valparaiso out-shot IPFW 17-7 in the game, with five of the Crusaders' and two of IPFW's shots coming on goal. Freshman goalkeeper Raphael Kotzock spent the entire 90 minutes in goal, picking up three saves.
In all, 21 players saw action for the Mastodons, with Uyamadu picking up three shots, two on goal, with Kyle Ackerman, Andy O'Donoghue, Austin West, and Darnell Parris each picking up one shot attempt.
The Mastodons open their 2013 regular season on Friday, August 30, when the squad hosts Northern Kentucky in the second match of a women's / men's doubleheader.
