FLORENCE, Ky. – Right handed pitcher Chuck Weaver will continue his baseball career with the Florence Freedom as the former IPFW baseball standout signed a deal to join the team late last week.
The Florence Freedom are members of the 12-team Independent Frontier League. The league is composed of teams from Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Missouri and Pennsylvania.
The Freedom play in the East Division along with the Evansville Otters, Traverse City Beach Bums, Washington Wild Things, Southern Illinois Miners, Lake Erie Crushers, and the Frontier Greys. The West Division is made up of the Gateway Grizzlies, River City Rascals, Normal Cornbelters, Windy City Thunderbolts, Joliet Slammers, Rockford Aviators, and the Schaumburg Boomers.
The Freedom currently sit in the middle of the East standings with an overall record of 15-12. Weaver saw his first action of the season on Saturday, June 15 after being signed by the club on Thursday, June 13. He came out of the bullpen to throw 2.2 innings, giving up just two hits and no runs. Weaver walked two and struck out two in his debut, yet the Freedom took a 6-3 loss to the Frontier Greys.
Weaver joins the club with a Rookie-1 status, which is for players who made their professional debut in the current season and therefore have no prior professional experience. The Rookie-2 status is another sub-classification for players who held the Rookie-1 status in the previous year, or began their professional career during the 2012 season.
Club rosters in the Frontier League have between 22 and 24 active players on the roster. Each team must carry a minimum of 11 rookies (combination of Rookie-1 and Rookie-2) and may carry a maximum of 13 players with unlimited professional experience.
Weaver won six games on the mound for IPFW during his two-year career. He moved to second all-time in school history with 87 strikeouts in a single-season during his junior campaign. Weaver came back to record 69 strikeouts in 2013, once again leading the team and placing fifth in the Summit League.
