Baseball Wins Season Opener 2-0 over Indiana State

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The IPFW baseball team defeated Indiana State on Friday night by the final score of 2-0. The Mastodons scored two runs in the top of the fifth inning and Kyle Sorensen entered the game to throw three scoreless innings to pick up the save.
IPFW scored two runs on eight hits. Despite seeing their first action of the season the defense was sound as the Mastodons ended the game without a single error on the scoreboard.
The fifth inning was the turning point in the game as Tyler Shepherd led off the inning with a walk. The Sycamores made a pitching change, but that didn't slow down IPFW as Shepherd stole second base to get into scoring position. A fielder's choice moved Shepherd to third base as Markus Kalber advanced safely to first base.
Kalber was picked off with Malcolm White at the plate, but IPFW still scored a run as an error allowed Shepherd to cross home plate.
Shane Trevino followed White in the lineup and delivered a single that moved White to second base. A wild pitch moved both runners up and another fielder's choice gave the Mastodons a 2-0 lead.
IPFW limited Indiana State to just two hits. Jason Kalber got the start and threw the first 4.2 innings of the game. Kalber walked eight, struck out two and allowed two hits during his time on the hill. Danny Tursell came out of the bullpen to earn the win. He threw 1.1 innings and recorded a strikeout without giving up any hits. Sorensen sealed the win with a three-inning save.
