
Women’s Tennis Ends Day One at Regional Championships

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The IPFW women's tennis team got off to a good start at the 2012 ITA Midwest Regional Championships. Anita Henestrosa recorded two wins on opening day giving her a shot to reach the singles main draw.
Henestrosa started her day with a match against Keti Mebuke of UIC at 10 a.m. on Thursday. Henestrosa defeated Mebuke 6-1, 6-3 and then went on to elimintate Chrissy Coffman of Toledo 7-6 (2), 6-1 to end the opening day with a record of 2-0. The senior will face Kelsey Lawson of DePaul on Saturday morning for a shot at reaching the singles main draw.
“We had a great first day and I was really proud of the way we competed,” said head coach Eric Burns. “Anita had two great wins and Caterina had a great win against Michigan State. We played at a high level today. Hopefully we can keep the momentum going tomorrow.”
Caterina Kiefer and Theresa Neumeyr each recorded a record of 1-1 on Thursday, winning their opening match but falling in round two. Kiefer defeated Olga Chemova of Michigan State 6-2, 6-2 before falling to Marta Burak of Youngstown State 6-2, 6-1. Neumeyr took down Dana Shannon of UW-Milwaukee 6-2, 6-3 but was eliminated 7-5, 6-2 by Nicole Flower of Ohio State.
Other Mastodons representing IPFW at the 2012 Mideast Regional Championships included Marcy Huck, Miloslava Shustova and Kristine Lindal. Huck lost to Kara Sherwood of Cleveland State in the opening round 6-2, 6-1 and took another tough loss in the consolation game against Lauren Hankle of Youngstown State 7-6 (4), 7-6 (5).
Shustova only got one game in as her consolation match was suspended due to rain. The junior was defeated by Margharita Sadovinikova of Youngstown State in the opening round 6-1, 6-4. Her match against Alex Power was cancelled.
Kristine Lindal only competed in the consolation bracket, but she ended the day 1-0 after winning her match against Dana Shannon 6-3, 6-4.
