Mike Fruchey’s student-athletes have earned six All-Summit League women’s cross country honors. Three have picked up Great Lakes All-Region accolades. Crystal Martinez was a national qualifier in 2008. In 2013, Brittany Beard was named the Summit League Newcomer of the Championship. Fruchey’s most decorated season came in 2007 when he was named Summit League Coach of the Year as the ‘Dons won the league title. It was the department’s first Summit League Championship in any sport. Fruchy’s student-athletes picked up 13 Summit League Women’s Cross Country Runner of the Week honors.
On the men’s side, Hunter Paris was named All-Summit League in 2007.
His teams have earned over 40 USTFCCCA All-Academic Team awards.
For women’s track and field, every school record has been set during Fruchey’s time as head coach. The ‘Dons have earned 14 Indoor and 12 Outdoor All-Summit League honors. Crystal Martinez and Crystina Martinez were named USTFCCCA Indoor and Outdoor Academic All-Americans in 2008. Crystal Martinez was a NCAA First Round qualifier in the 3000 meter steeplechase in 2008 and 2009. Crystina Martinez qualified for the NCAA First Round in the same event in 2008. In 2013 Theresa McHugh went in the javelin and Rachel Dincoff earned a spot in the shot put.
Prior to coaching at Purdue Fort Wayne, Fruchey had spent three years as a volunteer coach at Taylor University and three years as a volunteer coach at Carroll High School.
Coach Fruchey holds a Master’s degree in Physics from Ball State University and a Bachelor’s degree in Physics from Taylor University. In 2014, he graduated from the elite IAAF/USATF Endurance Academy with distinction, earning both the IAAF Level V and USATF Level III coaching certifications.
